This is achieved through dynamic professional development sessions and classroom lesson modeling, all centered around a structured literacy approach.

Prior to this position, I gained valuable experience teaching first, second, and third grades, served as the Gifted Support Teacher, and worked closely with small groups as an interventionist.

I am a graduate of Freeport High School (Class of 1990) and Penn State University (Class of 1994). In 2024, I earned my Reading Specialist certification with a Dyslexia Teaching Certificate from Carlow University.

Please reach out if I can help you!

My name is Kaitlyn Haney and this is my sixth year in the Freeport Area School District! I received my Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from Slippery Rock University, and I am also completing my Master's degree in Special Education from there as well. Education is a passion of mine and I hope to spread that love of learning throughout my classroom! Let's have a great school year! :)

Language Arts

Our reading program, Wonders includes grammar and writing.  Students will use the Wonders Practice Book. Other materials will be provided by the teacher (grammar packets, writing rubrics, and writing resources).

Weekly grammar instruction will be included.  Homework is typically assigned nightly in grammar.  Students will often have a small amount of class time to begin their grammar homework.  Worksheets in the practice book will be completed as part of class instruction.  I create packets for additional practice.  We also complete notes in a “Grammar Rock” notebook.  Students may refer to this notebook for homework and for studying for tests.  Grammar tests are given on Day 6.

We will complete many writing projects throughout the year.  Most of the time the genre is chosen by the teacher, but students choose their own topic.  A rubric will be used to assess your child’s final copy.  We will move through the writing process in class.  Please do not correct, write, or change your child’s assignments. Typed assignments will not be accepted.  Due to time constraints, students may have to work on these at home if they do not finish in class.  If a writing assignment comes home, it is important that parents do not do the work for their child.

Grading

In language arts, grading is comprised of writing projects, grammar assessment, and grammar homework packets.  There may be other assignments included this grade.

Assignments may be turned in late according to the following guidelines.  Homework is generally given 1 point; late homework must be turned in the next day for ½ point.   Your child will be given a zero for homework assignments if they are not turned in the next school day.  Illnesses and absences will be taken into consideration.  Generally, students are given one extra day to turn in work for each day that is missed.

Writing assignments that are late will have 10% of the final grade deducted for each day it is late.

Reading

Our reading series, Wonders, is aligned to the ELA Common Core standards.  This series also includes grammar, spelling, and writing instruction.  In addition to whole group instruction, paired reading, and independent work, students will be working in reading stations in my classroom.  The leveled readers and packets in these stations are differentiated for the different reading levels of 4th grade students.  Your child may change groups based on assessments, classroom performance, and teacher discretion.  Please check the newsletter for the weekly story selection, skills, and assessments and/or due dates.  I also include a reading “mini-project” to reinforce skills in a creative way for each selection.

Before the winter break and after PSSA testing, we will complete novel units.  My reading assignments do change during those times and will be communicated to students and parents.

Reading comprehension tests and vocabulary tests will be given on Day 6.  A reading “mini-project” will be assigned with each lesson or groups of lessons.  These assignments are another way for students to earn grades outside of taking a test.  They will reinforce one of the selection’s reading skills, include writing, and often allow for student creativity.  They will be graded based on the rubric on the assignment and in Schoology.

Grading

In reading, grading is comprised of comprehension and vocabulary assessments, skills test with cold reads, mini-reading projects, novel tests and novel packets.

Mini-reading projects and novel packets that are late will have 10% of the final grade deducted for each day it is late.

Rules and Guidelines

Physical Education

Class Rules: BEE honest  BEE kind  BEE helpful  BEE safe, have fun and work hard!

Reminders:

Please make sure that your child wears sneakers on gym day, as well as comfortable clothing!

If your child is unable to participate, for any reason, please provide a note from you or your doctor.  If you child is unable to participate in PE class, they will not be able to participate in recess or extra curricular physical activites.

Grades:

Students in grades 4 & 5 will receive a P.E. grade each semester (twice a year). They will earn a +, / , - based on their performance in the following categories:

Participation

Cooperation

Physical Fitness

Participation:

This specific grading category is based off of whether or not your child wears the appropriate shoes to class. While there is a good chance I will still permit your child to participate in the activity, without sneakers on, they are not able to give 100%. Each week they forget to wear sneakers they will receive an “X” in the gradebook. Once they earn three “X’s” they go from a (+) to a (/). If they accumulate more than three “X’s” throughout the grading period, they go down to a (-).

Cooperation:

I determine whether your child receives a (+), (/), or (-) in this category based off of their behavior. If your child is almost always following directions, doing what they are supposed to be doing, and staying on task, they will earn a (+) on their report card. If they have to be told a couple of times throughout the grading period to get back on task, they will go down to a (/). If they arconsistently off task and/or distracting others from learning, they will receive a (-).

Physical Fitness:

ALL students will receive a (/) in this category on their first report card. At the start of spring, all of my classes (excluding Kindergarten) complete a series of 5 physical fitness tests. I use the results of these tests to help determine there mark.  Their final grade will not be based only on physical ability.

Class Routines:

Grades 1-5 start each class running and/or walking laps

When the whistle is blown, the students line up at roll call number.  After I take attendance, I will explain what we are doing for the day.  The students will then go on the baseline and follow some basic locomotor movements.  To finsih the warm-up, they will report to a designated X on the floor and do the following exercises.

25 jumping jacks

20 mountain climbers

15 squats

10 second plank

5 push-ups

Exercises are subject to change.  This warm-up/strength activities takes about 10 minutes.  The final 30 of class will be used to work on the skill/game of the day.

What will we cover this year?

Soccer:

kicking, passing, goal tending

Basketball:

dribbling, passing, defending, shooting

Hockey:

5th Grade P.E. Club

P.E. Club is open to ALL 5th grade students.  Students are required to be at the school between 8:00-8:15. Please do not come any earlier or later.

P.E. Club is OPTIONAL. Students may come once, twice, every week, or not at all.

If numbers are high, P.E. Club will rotate weeks for boys and girls. Students will receive verbal reminders and it will be posted outside the gym on a bulletin board on whose week it is to attend.

Since this is optional and not a requirement, students may be asked to leave if their behavior does not follow school rules.

All tests, except for spelling, are comprised of 10 multiple choice questions. For the first nine-weeks (or longer), I will be reading all tests aloud to students.

Spelling – Students write 16 spelling words and 2 dictation sentences. Dictation sentences are scored based on word count (1 point for each word in the sentence), capitalization, punctuation, and the correct spelling of spelling words.
Phonics – Students must have an understanding of letters or groups of letters and the sounds they make.
Grammar – Students will be tested on a grammar skill practiced throughout the lesson.
Vocabulary – Students will be given an oral and written vocabulary test. The oral test will require students to read each vocabulary word aloud to me.
Comprehension – Students are tested on their knowledge and understanding of the main selection. *I do allow students to use their book to look back in the story if they cannot recall the answer to a comprehension question.
Math:

Students will be tested on each chapter. Students will be given a math vocabulary test and a math chapter test.
**Please see weekly newsletter for tentative test schedule.
